‘HINTERLAND’
2021- 24
These paintings (image objects) were initially inspired by extracts from a book about 19thc railways and their impact on the perception of landscape – a sequential framed experience rather than a slow erratic and immersive one.
I wondered how this related to my experiences of rail journeys through London’s suburbs and sometimes further afield; and how paradoxically the photographic apparatus suggests human perception to be made of breaks, absences, dislocations rather than a smooth glide. The Paintings are an attempt to reconcile the apparent with the occluded; and perhaps point to a hinterland where image and place perfectly coalesce.
“……it is hard not to feel that some part of myself is left there permanently in motion back and forth, a pale reflection in the carriage window overlaid on the skies and buildings rushing past.”
James Attlee, ‘Station to Station’
