‘OPPOSITE THE SUN’
2022
These paintings were based on live webcam images taken from cameras around Kiev in March 2022. They depict banal everyday scenes, the effects of the war were impossible to observe. The city seemed very near because of the absolute clarity of the images and yet also somehow far distant with knowledge of events unfolding. The images appeared to convey opposites, for example both at once conveying the seen but also the unseen. Through the materiality of their surfaces the paintings (image objects) hint at a missing corporeality and also point to the processes involved in their transcription across time, space and medium.

‘After-image’ 2019-2021
An Experience of an after image is caused when a perviously seen stimulus itself is no longer present. These paintings or as I sometimes prefer to call then ‘image objects’, are based on two sepia photographs bought in a junk shop several years ago. Somehow during the process both photographs have been lost, and the copies became copies of copies. Although the images were of two different locations, in some places they have begun to cohere and combine. Through retrieval, repetition and extension something new is forming, bringing out the possibilities laying hidden in the originals by ‘the accentuation of hidden details’.
