‘The park sequence’ 2014-17
This group of paintings was based on a short sequence from Michangelo Antonioni’s film ‘Blow-up’ (1966). I visited the location at Maryon park, Woolwich in London on many occasions, taking photographs and drawing. Most of the scene was shot in a single secluded location which remains hardly altered today. The paintings combine elements of film stills with views of the location as it is now. The encounter of site and sight, of topography and fictional narrative and of the apparent veracity of the photographic with painterly subjectivity has created a fascinating space. A kind of space where all kinds of elements can overlap and co-exist whilst not escaping into fantasy – an over painting of reality rather than a denial of it. Each one is oil paint with some collage on two panels. they are all 92cm X 62cm, except for one.
